Want to learn to row? We are now taking registration for our two Learn-To-Row programs in June.

June 2 is National Learn-To-Row Day. In two-hour blocks throughout the day, participants will gather at our Pope’s Island Marina launch site to learn a little bit about rowing and get a hands-on opportunity to row on a rowing machine and in a boat with experienced rowers. Participation in the two-hour program costs $25 per person and is open to all ages.

Our three-week, two-evenings-a-week Learn-To-Row Class begins Monday, June 4, 5:30-7:30 p.m. and continues in that time slot every Monday and Wednesday evening through June 20.

Open to participants of all ages, the class provides each student with the basics of rowing and enough on-the-water experience to allow most participants to “graduate” to one of our regular rowing programs.

The cost of the Learn-To-Row class is $75 for the session.

While new rowers of all ages are welcome in both programs, youth rowers may alternatively opt to begin rowing directly with our youth team. The team rows Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 and Saturday mornings from 9 to noon. The summer youth season begins June 4. cheyenne-bayseYouth coach Cheyenne Bayse has been promoted to the position of Head Coach and Waterfront Director, effective May 14.

Bayse, who has been coaching both youth and adults at NBCR this spring, is a two-time All-American college coxswain and former head rowing coach at the University School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In her new role, she will continue coaching with the added responsibility of overseeing the entire rowing program and NBCR’s waterfront facilities at the Pope’s Island Marina.

“In just a short time with us, Cheyenne has already made a tremendous positive difference,” said Executive Director Anne Eisenmenger in announcing Bayse’s appointment. She noted the three, week-long rowing clinics that NBCR will be running in conjunction with New Bedford Parks and Recreation this summer and a variety of outreach efforts to encourage more people of all ages to try the sport.

A native of San Diego, CA, Bayse learned to row at age 14 at the San Diego Rowing Club. By the time she graduated from high school, she was already coaching other youth rowers – and adults. Recruited by Nova Southeastern University in Florida, she was a 4-year member of the varsity crew.

Just 5-feet tall, Bayse’s role was as coxswain, the person who steers and directs a rowing boat. Often referred to as a “coach in the boat,” a coxswain has a coaching role even as a member of the team. In New Bedford, Bayse says one of her goals is to help develop great coxswains AND great rowers in the Whaling City.

In addition to her rowing pursuits, Bayse is in the final stages of completing a Masters Degree program in International Relations from Florida State University. Her thesis topic, dealing with corporate support for non-profit organizations, meshes nicely with her work for the fledging non-profit New Bedford Community Rowing.

Bayse says that she is excited to be a part of New Bedford Community Rowing, noting that “the history of New Bedford is so intertwined with the water that crew is a natural fit. I’m very excited to be a part of New Bedford Community Rowing and know that we can build a great rowing epicenter in Southeastern New England.”

This spring’s three college races and one high school race on the harbor marked a major milestone toward the goal of making New Bedford a premier venue for out-of-town crews to use for races. The other part of NBCR’s main mission is to bring the physical, mental, and academic benefits of rowing to hundreds of New Bedford youth and hundreds of more from the wider South Coast.

“Cheyenne’s agreement to join NBCR will speed our progress toward attaining that goal – sooner rather than later,” Eisenmenger said.

Her appointment doubles the NBCR staff as she joins Director Carolyn McGonagle, whose title expands to Waterfront Director and Head Coach.

In their new roles, Anne will be responsible for the overall administration and finance of the organization – with particular emphasis on fund-raising and cementing partnerships with the city and other organizations. Carolyn will continue to be responsible for the rowing program and everything that happens on the water.

In announcing Anne’s appointment, Board President Laurie Bullard noted the complimentary skills Anne and Carolyn bring to the organization.

“Carolyn has done an amazing job of building the organization from nothing two years ago and, along the way, has earned the respect and affection of all our athletes,” she said. “Anne combines knowledge of rowing with deep experience in management and communications.”

An oarswoman since her days at Williams College, Anne more recently rowed for seven years with CRI’s women’s team in Boston – picking up gold medals at the Masters National Championships, the Canadian Henley, and the Head of the Charles. She has served on NBCR’s board since the organization’s founding and rowed with NBCR last summer.

Anne has spent most of a long career in media, coming to New Bedford 30 years ago as Sunday Editor for The Standard-Times. (Fun fact: It was in that capacity that she helped organize the first whaleboat races on New Bedford Harbor.) She went on to hold editorial and business management posts at The Boston Globe and GateHouse Media. Anne is currently founder and publisher of the Wareham Week and Sippican Week newspapers and related VillageSoup websites.

She and husband Patrick Lester (also an oarsman) live in Wareham. Her three grown children – Emil, Emily, and Erik Peinert – include two oarsmen and a women’s Rugby player.

The NBCR board is confident that the new team provides the program with the firepower needed to embark on a program of rapid expansion – expansion that will, in the not-too-distant future, include a boathouse, a dramatically larger group of rowers, and a variety of new programs.

She succeeds Tom Gonsiorowski of Arlington – marking both a changing of the guard and a conscious decision to move control of the New Bedford organization more directly into the hands of New Bedford area residents. Gonsiorowski, who also serves of the board of parent organization Community Rowing Inc. in Boston, will remain on the NBCR board as Vice President.

Laurie is a long-time New Bedford resident with deep roots in the community and extensive experience with the management of non-profit organizations, including The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay, The Trustees of Reservations, The Nature Consevancy, and Friends Academy.  In addition, she has owned and operated her own retail business, and managed retail businesses for Liz Claireborne, Carmelo Pomodoro, and Eileen Fisher.

Laurie has been a mentor for the SMILES program, a volunteer reader in the New Bedford elementary schools, and has sat on a number of non-profit boards.  Most recently, as a volunteer working closely with both Matthew Morrissey, Executive Director of New Bedford’s Economic Development Council, and Kristin Decas, former Executive Director of the Harbor Development Commission, Laurie was responsible for promoting recreational yacht visits and layovers to New Bedford harbor; a successful endeavor that has brought a large number of cruising clubs and families, and such yacht clubs as The Corinthians, The Boston branch of the Cruising Club of American, Beverly and New Bedford.

Laurie is a life-long sailor, and enthusiastic rower of  small boats and now shells.

“New Bedford’s harbor is an exceptionally beautiful harbor and I want to encourage as many people as I can to experience that beauty,” she said.

The combination of her love for the harbor and love of being on the water seemed a natural fit as a member of the NBCR board since its incorporation.  Laurie is pleased to take on this leadership role.  She noted that her immediate priorities with NBCR are expansion of the board, establishment of “standing committees” to oversee various aspects of the organization, and fund-raising.  She is pleased to be working closely with her fellow board members and staff to achieve the goals established for the community rowing program.

“This program has the potential to significantly change our students’ lives and to change people’s perception of our beautiful harbor and this amazing city,” she said.

To non-rowers, the idea of lining up a lot of rowing machines and “racing” for medals may seem a little crazy. But indoor rowing competition provides a needed goal for winter training and, for this year’s New Bedford rowers, it was an opportunity to show off the results of that training.

A dedicated group of adults and kids are training with us three to four times a week this winter – and made us very proud at two recent indoor races.

At Cape Cod Rowing’s Jan. 29 “Cranberry Crunch,” NBCR had the largest number of athletes of any group there — including the host club!  Six adults and 11 kids raced, with many parents on hand to cheer them on. Big congratulations to Ellen Moroney, Jenna Neves, and Aryanna Taylor for winning the Junior Lightweight, Junior Coxswain, and Junior Girls divisions respectively. Almost everyone from NBCR achieved either their target time or their personal record.

On February 19th, 12 NBCR athletes raced at the  C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprint World Indoor Rowing Championship in Boston, featuring competitors from all over the world.  (Andrew Pereira, Jenna Neves, and Nick Mezzanotte didn’t race, but were on hand to support their teammates. )

In order of their races:

Lightweight masters rower Jane Scott is new to NBCR and hasn’t yet been in a boat with us.  But that didn’t stop her from working just as hard as our “vets” and competing in the biggest indoor rowing race in the US.  And she hit the goal coach Ken Clark had set for her. We can’t wait to see what she does on the water!

Lightweight masters rower Anne Eisenmenger (and new NBCR Executive Director), rowing in one age class older than Jane, went in with a goal of beating an 8 minute time. She did it – with two tenths of a second to spare and a second-place finish.  The winner came from Denmark.

David Filipek, a hearty masters rower who started working out with NBCR last winter before even being in a boat, pulled his best time of a 7:10!  And that was after a vacation took him away from training for the better part of a week.

Next up were “my peanuts”:

Bethany Mello and Rachel Schwartz both blew away their targets and beat their best times by quite a bit.  They also came away from the event feeling more confident than ever before.

Ellen Moroney pulled a time similar to her previous 2K times, despite an understandable attack of nerves at the biggest indoor race in the country.

Aryanna Taylor, even nursing a sore back, came close to repeating her Cranberry Crunch time and attained her targeted goal for the day.

Danielle Lopez blasted out of the start, and found herself well ahead of her target goal at the 1,700 mark. The last 300 meters are a killer – but Danielle still hit her target time.

Alex Milde of Mattapoisett, rowing for NBCR at the C.R.A.S.H.-B’s while recovering from a broken hand, pulled a 6:43 (6 minutes and and 43 seconds), finishing 85th among 213 competitors!

Ending the day of awesome racing came three of our evening adult rowers.

Vincent Savino took 28 seconds off of his time from just 3 weeks earlier!

Kanhai Shah, coming in with a goal of breaking 8 minutes,  pulled a 7:57 and kept his form better than he ever has before.

Our final racer of the day was Emma Gill, a recent addition to our club who hails from England.  We not only love her accent and new phrases that she teaches us, we love her work ethic and positive attitude.  Our third athlete to break 8:00, Emma pulled a 7:59!

I am so proud of ALL our athletes, their parents, our coaches.  At practice, at races, in general – I’m seeing such amazing support of each other.  That in itself is making us faster and stronger, and I simply can’t wait to get back on the water and see what these guys can really do!!

We suffered a lot of damage to our fleet of boats during a bad wind storm on April 13th. Captain Jono Billings heard about it and offered to help us raise money to replace the damaged boats.

Tickets to and from Cuttyhunk Island will be $45 and we’ll provide some delicious light bites from Cork Wine & Tapas. We’ll be on the boat from 6-8pm and the boat will have a cash bar available. Please join us and support our club as we rebuild our fleet, while you enjoy a fantastic evening aboard a great boat!  A link to purchase tickets can be found HERE.  The Ferry will be leaving from 66B State Pier, South Bulkhead, New Bedford, MA 02740.
